I WANT TO HELP
Many people want to help the environment, but aren't sure where to start or what to do. Here are a few things you can do on a regular basis without too much thought at all!
1. REUSE YOUR CUP Many people in the United States buy coffee once or even twice a day from a coffee house or store. Adding up all the cups you throw away during the year is shocking. So why not bring your own cup? Many coffee shops will actually cut some off of your bill if you supply your own cup. So not only are you helping out the environment, it is a benefit for you, too! 2. USE BOTH SIDES OF THE PAPER Offices and schools alone throw away a TON of paper every year that hasn't been used on both sides. This paper could easily be used again, or at least be recycled! Using both sides of the paper can save time, and the trees! 3. MEAT FREE MONDAY Every hamburger you eat takes over 2,000 gallons of water. Think what you could save if once or twice a week, you have no meat in your meals. There are plenty of substitutes for protein, such as beans, nuts, and cheese. 4. RECYCLE YOUR PHONE The average phone lasts about 20 months, and most people will toss their old one and get a new one LONG before that. When your phone is truly dead, there are many places that will take your phone and recycle the parts of it. 5. THINK ABOUT YOUR PURCHASES The next time you are at a store with a cart full of accessories, think about each one, and whether or not you truly need it. You could save so much this way; about thinking about our purchases before we buy them. Half our things end up stuffed in a closet or gathering dust in the attic. 6. TURN OFF THE WATER I know that you've all heard this one before, but it is truly something that everyone would do good to remember; turn off the water while you brush your teeth! In the U.K. alone, gallons upon GALLONS of water go down the drain each month; water that hasn't been used for anything. So by turning off your water, you can help out the environment, and also cut down on the water bill! 7. TURN OFF THE LIGHTS Especially during the summer, when plenty of light is coming in from the outside. When you leave the room, remember to flick the switch, and you could save so much electricity. Even when you are in the room, think about whether or not you need the light to be on. |
